Updates

Welcome once again to what’s turning into weekly update time. Really, part of me says “I should be in bed damnit, but I’m so not tired” and I’m hoping that by posting, I can maybe release some of this anxiety and get to sleep. So, without further ado, here’s the past week, summed up.

There have been several chiropractic appointments. Apparently, my spine has been responding nicely. I’m told that things are moving a lot better than they have been. That being said, I think something wasn’t quite right on the last treatment (Saturday morning), and since I’ve had random headaches, random points of soreness around my back, and even a few small spasms, including two tonight on the drive home from Belen.

The week itself held little in the way of events, aside from the estimates on the car’s damage. Depending on who you ask, the retail value of our 2001 Pontiac Sunfire scales from $6,500 to $7,000. The damage estimate is a couple of dollars shy of $7,800. It’s obviously going to be a total loss, right? Technically, we don’t know yet, as the insurance company hasn’t been able to get the police report. If it’s determined that the other party has insurance, we’re going to have to chase after them. However, since the guy got out and ran, and since we’ve heard nothing from anyone yet, I’d imagine that the person was uninsured and/or the vehicle was stolen and/or any other number of events.

I didn’t get Monday off for MLK, but I did get Friday off simply because I get every other Friday off. I have to say, that’s pretty nifty. I may not get as many holidays, but the sheer fact of having every other Friday off (and short Fridays when I do work ‘em) really makes up for it. I did a bunch of responsible stuff, such as reviewing insurance coverages, getting quotes on life insurance, balancing the checkbook, and some digital housekeeping.

Saturday was all about errands and such. First, a chiropractic stop. Next, a stop at David’s Bridal so Lisa could be fitted for her Bridesmaid’s dress. It’s very awesome looking, but I’ll refrain from any description in the event that the groom reads this. Naturally, I’ll eventually be posting photos after the event, which is now less than four weeks away. Carlos will be in town to make it, which is awesome.

After David’s Bridal, it was car shopping time. First, we went to the Honda dealership. We were pretty dead set on the Honda CR-V, but then we looked at the Honda Pilot, and, well, it seems to be a better fit. It’s notably more lush, not too much bigger, and more affordable than we’d thought. It’s not cheap, but on the other hand, it means we’d be able to pretty much stick with it until it dies, whereas the CR-V would need to be replaced with something larger (like the Pilot) once our family grows.

After that, we had yet more errands. We had to go to a flower shop and Costco, and we also met up with Anthony and Audra for dinner at Olive Garden, then a quick trip to Target with them. Also, somewhere in that sequence we stopped by Pier One for bridal shower gifts.

Today was Audra’s bridal shower. Rumor is that every woman within a 50 mile radius of Belen showed up. Anthony and I hung out during the event, and I purchased the World Series of Poker Xbox game, and he and I played that for awhile waiting for the ladies. It was a blast. It goes online, so I may find myself playing some poker online with it. After that, we came home because Lisa still had some work to do.

That drive home was so incredibly nerve-wracking. I started getting antsy about driving, and the sun went down during the drive. It’s somewhere around 30-45-ish minutes I think, but it felt like hours. Everyone was driving just a bit too fast for me, and some jerk totally rushed up behind me, stopped just short of hitting me, and blasted his high beams right into my rear-view window. I’ve been feeling super antsy and jumpy since.

Lisa and I are both still pretty hyper-sensitive when it comes to the cars. Any sorts of fast movements make us jump. It’s so frustrating. I recall this happening when I had my other accident, but I don’t think it was so bad then simply because I was a teen with the invincibility complex. I don’t have that now. When I sit and think about the accident, I just feel so lucky that neither of us were seriously injured. I mean, my back is pretty messed up, but it could be so much worse.

In lighter news, the Steelers won today, which makes me happy. Denver is kind of the defacto team to root for in the area (aside from the Cowboys, ugh), but I have in-law family ties to Pittsburgh, so it’s pretty nifty. I wish Carolina would have won their game, but it wasn’t to be. My father-in-law roots for the Steelers and my brother-in-law goes for the Panthers, so it’d have been a really amusing Super Bowl.

I think I’m done for now. Writing has released some of the tension I’ve been feeling. Hopefully I can get some good sleep tonight.

When your family grows? Is that a hint of things to come ;)

Anyway, the CR-V is an awesome vehicle, my father had one which my sister has all but taken over. It’s been going strong for five or six years now. I have no experience with the Pilot, but I’d guess that it’s just as good, only bigger.

Also, I did the same thing after my accident. I slid on ice and hit a tree though, so for the longest time I just about had a heart attack every time I thought the wheels were slipping, or even just when taking turns in the snow. As it is, I still tense up driving in the snow, even though I’m fairly adept at it now (I’ve gone off the road once since then, and since I was able to hit the snow bank rather than the truck in front of me, I think I did pretty well). It’ll get better with time though.
