Contemplating a “Live Redesign”
I moved my blog software over from Movable Type to WordPress some months ago. At the time, I had been using a fairly standard template for my site. When I moved over to WordPress, I grabbed another template, and with very little modification (if any), I’ve been using that for some time.
When I think about websites, I think about how it’s generally an expression of that person’s unique traits and their personality. It’s their space, to do with as they please. In some regards, I do that quite a bit — I have quite a bit of software installed in my webspace, not to mention the fact that I have a few domains, not just RandomThink.net (although RandomThink.net is the only one for purely personal content).
However, the appearance of my website is completely not my own. It’s just some standard template that I got from somewhere at some point early in my WordPress conversion, and somewhere along the way I made some small adjustments to add things such as the Flicker and TextAmerica pictures on the side, or my wonderful SiteBar live link plugin (which really isn’t that custom, just really useful at keeping those links fresh).
I find it funny that this post is going to be the 500th post on this blog. Almost 40 of them (at least 33, not sure of the exact number) have been straight from the phone, especially during my trips to Oklahoma. It was neat at the time to spam my blog with pictures, but I like to be a bit more selective now. It’s fun to use pictures though, so I may go ahead and start doing some more picture-oriented posts.
Anyhow, as I was starting to say with the last paragraph, it’s funny that my 500th published post will wind up being the one where I discuss site redesign. I actually started drafting up this post a few days ago (before the Personal Growth post), but have been hesitant to post it for some reason. It’s really not that relevant to you, the reader, aside from the fact that it could (and probably would) make my site fairly ugly and bland for an indeterminate amount of time.
I then realized that WordPress is currently working on a 1.5 release (which is currently in a unique state of beta, one that actually keeps me away from installing it, at least for now). WordPress 1.5 will have some sort of theming support. That inspired me. At this point, I’m going to wait for WordPress 1.5, and then I will do a redesign. Besides, I have other sites I really should be working on, rather than this one, including at least two special secret-ish projects.

Site redesigns cause me to worry – I always assume they’ll go bad and the site will be done for long stretches of time.
Not sure how my friend ran across your site, but he forwarded a link relative to the
“ebay house from hell”: I’ll use it to explain why MY mother hasn’t had anyone in this
house since 1996, after my dad died. It would come a close second, except, instead of ebay
she does QVC! Also? Another Brian on Feb 1st? That’s my B-Day as well, except add a decade.
