Be your own Hotspot

In a recent post, I summarized my trip to California, which included mentioning how we posted to the Internet from the car. That was awesome as it was, but imagine a whole caravan of cars driving along, all online via a portable WiFi Hotspot. That would have sounded ludicrous to me, until I read this:

Be Your Own Hotspot – Popular Science

Mike Outmesguine details how to take a backpack and a cellular network that supports EV-DO, and turn it into a portable hotspot for high speed Internet access. That’s simply too awesome for words.

Whatever happened to regular reading or listening to a cd in the car?! Playing cow poker, stopping at
seedy truckstops for coffee, snoozing (not while driving) or talking???

    Sheesh!

Well, all of those things still happen, just, with more modern twists.

    On my last road trip:
We brought books, although we didn’t read.
We brought a couple of CDs, although generally, we listened to the iPod via an FM transmitter.
I don’t know what cow poker is, or how to play it, so we didn’t do that.
We stopped at a seedy truckstop, although we bought soft drinks.
    We snoozed a bit.
    We talked a ton.

All of those things happened, just with extras, like surfing the Internet or taking and editing photos. It was a blast. I don’t know if any future road trips will be able to live up to that one anytime soon.
