So, back in August of 2003, I posted about an MSNBC article called God in the console, talking about Christianity and video games. Now, the NY Times (free registration required) has posted an article called PlayStations of the Cross. The title of the article is a big enough turnoff for me, but I decided to read it, because I can’t help myself when something mixes faith and gaming.
I discussed a lot of my feelings in the past, and while a number of them have changed, some haven’t. For example, I’m looking forward to playing GTA: San Andreas on the Xbox when it comes out in June. I probably won’t buy it, and I probably won’t do much more than ride around listening to 90s music, but it’s something I want to try. I’m sure that I’ll eventually stop playing because I can’t stomach having to complete some of the tasks. Read my prior post, because I talk about similar feelings with GTA:VC and some other sorts of games.
Overall, in comparison to the article from ‘03, the NY Times article reads like a more in-depth version. I was surprised to see that it’s a four-page article on the NY Times website, whereas the MSNBC article two years ago was just some paragraphs on one page. It talks about how much more gaming has grown, and draws some interesting parallels to Christian pop, which is now a large and growing division of music today. It’s an interesting read. I’m not sure what more to say about it without repeating myself from my other post, so read on. That being said, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

That really was quite interesting.
I’ve always thought that the biggest impediment to Christian versions of things was a lack of quality. If you’ve got a Christian game that comes out looking like the videogames of three years ago, it’s an immediate turn-off to a kid who’s used to higher-quality stuff. That applies to more than just videogames, too. If radio shows have the show’s producer’s kids rather than actual voice actors, it shows and I think it puts people off. It puts *me* off, anyway.
An interesting read, though.
