A couple of posts back, I mentioned joy that WordPress had support for Markdown out of the box. While I was glad that this support was there, I was noticing a bit of site lag. It turns out that it was adding roughly a tenth of a second per post in terms of processing. That’s not too bad in some regards. I mean, I only keep ten posts on the front page, so that’s only an extra second, right? It was coming out at roughly 1.1 to 1.2 seconds to generate this page. No big deal, right?
Wrong. I pulled up October 2003, and it took almost 14 seconds to generate the page. That’s 54 posts on one page. It was adding almost .25 seconds on average per post. That’s still not that big of a deal, I suppose - but then I realized that I only had like six entries that used Markdown. Now I’m back to using plain HTML to write my entries, and things are blazingly fast. I did a test while writing this, and it only took 0.193 seconds to generate the main page, and 0.65 or so seconds to generate October 2003. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Also, through the use of WordPress, I’m rediscovering the joy of blogging, so hopefully maybe I can get back into the posting groove. There’s never a better time to start, after all.
