Sketchfest ‘03

As you may or may not know, I’ve started up a small sketchbook online. Today, I went sketch crazy during classes, and came up with a few pieces I like, and felt worthy to post. Here’s a full linkset to each one, because I’m sadistic like that.

This sketchfest (and the ones to continue daily from here out) was all inspired (well, mostly inspired) by some recent postings by Gabe from Penny Arcade, particularly the newspost for the January 29th, 2003 comic. I’ve clipped an excerpt here:

If you take time every single day to draw you cannot help but improve. Just take a sketchbook with you to school and draw the kids in your class. Or take one into meetings with you, the boss will think your taking notes. If you can just draw something everyday you will be surprised how much and how fast you improve.

As he said about that piece of advice, it’s stuck with him forever, and I’m sure it will stick with me now too.

Anyone’s who followed along with me so far knows that I’ve talked about making RandomThink.net into a comic. At this point, I don’t think that’ll happen. I like having RandomThink.net as a personal site, for things like my blog, my sketchbook - basically, my presence on the web. In that sense, RandomThink.net is a good domain for me. My thoughts are very erratic and chaotic (word up, Mr. H) and as such, RandomThink is good because I never know what I’m going to wind up posting.

I’ve spoken at length with Adam about starting up a comic, and I think it would be a lot of fun to draw. However, one other thing I’ve heard Gabe say on PA recently is that you really have to have the urge coming out of you, that you need to feel like if you don’t draw it right then and there, if you don’t get it out onto the paper, you’ll just bust. At first, I wasn’t feeling that at all. Now, I think that I am, at least to some extent. Drawing feels better every single time I pick up the pencil.

Maybe my artistic side is finally waking up from the long, Computer Science induced sleep, and is starting to manifest itself. Maybe that means that someday, I’ll get around to changing my blog templates and appearance.
